– Real Madrid defeated Sevilla 3 – 2 to win the UEFA Super Cup

– Dani Carvajal scored the winning goal in seconf half of extra-time

– Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale did not play in the match

Real Madrid have won the 2016 UEFA Super Cup following a 3 – 2 extra-time win over fellow La Liga club Sevilla.

Real Madrid won the 2016 Champions League while Sevilla won the UEFA Europa League title.

Sevilla controlled the game and had more of the possession but came up short in extra-time against Zinedane Zidane’s side.

Academy product Marco Asensio opened the scoring in the 21th minute with a beautiful long range strike before new signing Franco Vazquez equalized for Sevilla in the 40th minute with a left footed volley.

In the second half Sevilla continued to control possession and were duly rewarded when Yevheniy Konoplyanka scored a penalty in the 72nd minute.

With Sevilla looking to have won the game, SergioRamos popped up with a 90th minute goal by converting with a header from a corner kick.

In extra time, Thimothee Kolodziejczak was shown a red card for a reckless challenge and it seemed Sevilla would bottle it but they continued to control possession.

Madrid with the one man advantage had chances to score with Karim Benzema, James Rodriguez and Lucas Vazquez guilty of missing scorable chances.

With the match going towards its end in the second half of extra-time, Dani Carvajal driblled past three tired Sevilla players and shot into the top corner.

Thats how it ended as Real Madrid won another Super Cup with their last coming in 2014 against Sevilla.
